But if these results hold up, the spread of strains against which existing vaccines are substantially less effective would be a significant risk to lives and could delay the end of the pandemic. What’s more difficult to estimate is when a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 will emerge. It could be a day after we publish this update, or six months , or years from now. The extraordinary progression we’ve already seen—in just over two years four strains in succession have become globally dominant—makes it dangerous to plan on a “no new variant” scenario.

The serologic tests and polymerase chain reaction tests are used to identify SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid to determine if individuals have COVID-19. More research is necessary to determine the accuracy of serologic test results for COVID-19 and how to best use this technology to slow or stop the spread of this disease. The IAFF supports the recommendation from the Food and Drug Administration that results from antibody testing alone should not be used to diagnose or exclude COVID-19 infection or to inform infection status. UV-C lights have been used for many years in ambulances for disinfection. It is important to note that this cannot be the ONLY means of disinfection. UV-C lights will disinfect surfaces on which there is direct access for the appropriate period of time (time is related to energy of the UV-C lamps).
What does a close contact of a person with COVID-19 need to do?
Contacts are encouraged to stay home and maintain social distance from others (at least 6 feet) until 14 days after their last exposure, in case they also become ill. They should monitor themselves by checking their temperature twice daily and watching for cough or shortness of breath. To the extent possible, public health staff should check in with contacts to make sure they are self-monitoring and have not developed symptoms. Contacts who develop symptoms should promptly isolate themselves and notify public health staff. They should be promptly evaluated for infection and for the need for medical care.

The degree to which T-cell cross-reactivity actually immunizes individuals hasn’t been proven. If T-cell cross-reactivity provides meaningful immunity, it would offer significant progress toward herd immunity. The prevalence of cross-reactive immunity may vary substantially by region. Tests that identify host immune response are referred to as serological tests and are intended to be administered as simple blood tests. These tests can indicate whether an individual has been previously exposed to COVID-19. Antibody test results are important in detecting infections in individuals with few or no symptoms and have been used in conjunction with RT-PCR results in establishing a diagnosis or exclusion of COVID-19 infection. IgM and IgG are the two major antibodies assessed by serologic testing.
